A Pennsylvania college student was fatally shot by police early Sunday after his family says he mistakenly went to the wrong house following a night out with friends.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 23 in Upper Pottsgrove Township, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
Police were called to a home on Snyder Road after a 911 report of a possible attempted break-in.
When officers arrived, they found a man behind the residence.
“An encounter ensued and police fired at the male subject, fatally striking the subject,” the district attorney’s office said.
Authorities have not yet explained what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting or what prompted officers to open fire.
The man was later identified by his family as 22-year-old Glenwood “Bubba” Pysher.
His mother, Erin Pysher, said her son had gone out to celebrate a friend’s birthday at a local bar before the group decided to continue the night at someone’s house.
According to Erin, Glenwood decided to walk there but accidentally ended up at the wrong home after having a few drinks.
“He ended up at the wrong house after having a few drinks,” she told WPVI. “He didn’t know that, so he was knocking on the door saying, ‘Hey, let me in.’ Thinking it was his friend’s house, but it wasn’t.”
His mother said the entire situation unfolded within minutes.
“12:32, he was on the phone with his friends. By 12:35, I believe he’s already shot,” she said.
She also claimed her son was unarmed.
“He had a cell phone and a book bag,” she said.
The Montgomery County Detective Bureau is now investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved death.
The exact circumstances surrounding the encounter remain under investigation.
Glenwood’s family described him as a “wonderful man” who loved baseball and was preparing to play at Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey.
His mother remembered him as a “lovable goofball” who was almost always in a good mood.
“He will walk in the back door and say his favorite thing, ‘Hey mom, your favorite kid is home,’” she said. “He was just happy-go-lucky. Didn’t have a care in the world, and I’m going to miss that.”
Glenwood was supposed to return to college on Monday, Aug. 24.
His family has started a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses. It had raised more than $18,000 toward a $24,000 goal.
