An Indiana woman is facing felony charges after police say she repeatedly struck a child in a church parking lot after the child asked her for water.
Amy Fuller, 44, of Warsaw, was arrested over the weekend and charged with felony domestic battery and felony neglect of a dependent, according to court records.
The investigation began around 12:45 p.m. Saturday when officers with the Warsaw Police Department were called to the parking lot of Hamilton Church of Christ in the 4000 block of East Bellefontaine Road, about 150 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
Witnesses told police they had seen a woman striking a child.
By the time officers arrived, Fuller had allegedly left the church in a purple vehicle with the child and another youngster.
Police soon spotted the car traveling on Water Street and pulled it over.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Fuller was on the phone as officers approached and could be heard telling someone that she was being stopped.
She also allegedly described the child as “out of control and not listening.”
When officers spoke with the child, the victim initially claimed Fuller had only struck them once in the leg.
Police said the child appeared frightened and had a visible hand-shaped welt on the leg.
But four witnesses from the church reportedly told investigators a much more disturbing story.
According to the affidavit, the child had repeatedly asked Fuller for water.
Fuller allegedly responded, “I don’t f—ing care.”
Witnesses said Fuller then dragged the child toward the purple car and allegedly punched the youngster several times in the back of the head.
The child was later examined at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital.
Doctors reportedly found “a large lump on the back of the victim’s head,” according to court records.
Fuller allegedly denied hitting the child when questioned by police.
However, she reportedly told investigators that the child had been “embarrassing me in front of people.”
She was arrested and booked into the Steuben County Jail.
Fuller was released Tuesday after posting a $750 bond.
If convicted on both charges, she could face up to 8½ years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
The case remains pending.
