An MTA cleaner (subway) was stabbed after confronting a man who was urinating on a busy Times Square subway platform, police said.
The disturbing incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday at the major Midtown transit hub.
According to the NYPD and law enforcement sources, the 30-year-old transit worker spotted a man relieving himself on the platform and told him to stop.
The confrontation quickly turned violent.
Police said the man became enraged and got into a physical fight with the cleaner before stabbing him in the left arm, leaving him with a serious cut.
The injured worker was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
By Thursday, the MTA said he had been treated and released.
The cleaner has worked for the transit agency since July 2023.
The suspect fled the scene by boarding a southbound No. 1 train and remained at large as of Thursday.
Police later released surveillance footage showing the man wearing glasses, a goatee and a backpack while riding the train.
MTA officials condemned the attack.
“It’s unacceptable that someone would attack a transit worker doing their job to improve the lives of New York subway riders,” Bill Amarosa Jr., the MTA’s executive vice president of subways, said in a statement.
He added that the worker appeared to be recovering quickly and thanked the NYPD for investigating.
Transit cameras captured the suspect on video, and authorities are now asking the public for help identifying him.
