A South Carolina woman accused of stabbing a Lyft driver 11 times and stealing his car will remain behind bars after a judge denied her bond.
The alleged attack happened on the afternoon of April 22 in Greenville County.
According to police documents obtained by Law & Crime, 22-year-old Naziyha La’Nay Weatherall ordered a Lyft ride to an apartment complex in Greenville.
When the driver arrived to pick her up, Weatherall allegedly attacked him with a knife, stabbing him 11 times before taking off in his vehicle.
The driver’s name has not been publicly released.
Police responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. and rushed the injured man to a hospital for treatment.
Weatherall was arrested later that same day, according to Greenville County arrest records.
She now faces charges of attempted murder, carjacking involving bodily injury and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Weatherall has remained in custody since the alleged attack.
During a bond hearing on Friday, Aug. 28, the Lyft driver’s wife spoke on his behalf and said her husband was still too emotionally and physically shaken to attend himself.
“The alleged conduct was extremely violent,” she said, according to Fox Carolina.
She said her husband suffered 11 stab wounds to multiple areas of his body and argued that the violence raised serious concerns for public safety.
“What concerns us most is that happened while my husband was simply working,” she added. “He was not looking for any confrontation, he was providing a service to a person.”
She said the family worried that if such an attack could happen to someone simply doing his job, others in the community could also be at risk.
Lyft also responded to the case.
“Violence like this has no place in the Lyft community or in our society,” a company spokesperson told PEOPLE.
The company said the driver’s well-being had been its priority and that Lyft had reached out to him and his family to offer support.
Lyft also said the rider accounts connected to the incident were permanently removed from the platform and that the company was continuing to cooperate with law enforcement.
Weatherall’s defense attorney argued during the hearing that she was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the alleged attack.
The attorney said Weatherall had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was suffering from delusions that made her believe she was in extreme danger.
According to the defense, Weatherall had ordered the Lyft because she wanted to travel to a police station and seek protection from threats she believed were being made against her.
Weatherall’s mother also addressed the court.
She apologized to the driver’s family but said the alleged violence was completely out of character for her daughter.
“She’s not a criminal. She would never, ever, ever hurt anybody like that,” she said, according to Fox Carolina.
“And I understand the family’s side, I truly do, because we are all suffering. We all are.”
Despite the defense arguments, the judge denied Weatherall bond.
She will remain in custody until a psychological evaluation is completed in September.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment, and an attorney for Weatherall also did not immediately respond.
Lyft drivers need to carry… Had he shot her in the head all her problems would go away including her mental break downs and the rest of us would be safer without this psycho.
