Firefighters responding to a house fire in Los Angeles County made a horrifying discovery early Saturday morning when they found a married couple and their young son dead inside the home from apparent gunshot wounds.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was called to a home in the 5000 block of East 61st Street in Maywood around 2:20 a.m. after reports of flames and heavy smoke.
Fire crews requested additional assistance as they worked to bring the blaze under control.
Once firefighters were able to enter the home, they found three people dead inside a bedroom, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the victims appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
A gun was also recovered at the scene.
The victims were described as a married man and woman in their late 40s and their biological son, who was younger than 10 years old.
Investigators said the deaths appear to be connected to domestic violence.
“The incident appears to be domestic violence in nature. The two adults are married, and the child is their biological child,” the sheriff’s office said.
Video posted to the Citizen app showed firefighters working on the roof of the residence as smoke poured from the home.
It remains unclear how the fire started.
Authorities have not publicly released the victims’ names.
The case remains under investigation.
