A Missouri man has been arrested after police say he opened fire on a car outside a Jimmy John’s restaurant, striking a 14-year-old girl who was sitting inside.
Adam White, 27, was arrested in connection with the Sept. 6 shooting in the parking lot of a Jimmy John’s on Laclede Avenue in St. Louis, according to court records.
Police were called to the area after receiving reports of gunfire and found the teenage girl inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg.
She was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Investigators said the shooting stemmed from an argument involving the girl’s mother and other people connected to the restaurant.
According to police, the mother had recently been fired from the location and became involved in a dispute with others there. The situation escalated after the girl’s father, who is also the woman’s boyfriend, arrived.
The argument eventually spilled into the parking lot, where police say White and the woman continued fighting.
A probable cause statement identified White as a Jimmy John’s employee, though the franchise later told PEOPLE that none of the people involved were employees at the time of the shooting.
Police said the woman, her daughter and the teen’s father eventually got into a vehicle and began driving away.
That is when White allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the car.
One of the bullets struck the 14-year-old in her left leg.
White allegedly fled the scene after the shooting but later returned and was taken into custody.
According to the probable cause statement, White admitted to police that he fired at the vehicle and told officers the gun was inside his residence.
He has been charged with one count of child endangerment, three counts of first-degree assault, five counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
Online court records did not list plea or attorney information.
Police also arrested a 38-year-old person in connection with the incident, but that individual had not been charged as of publication.
A Jimmy John’s spokesperson said the company was aware of the shooting and was cooperating fully with investigators.
