An 11-year-old Oklahoma girl has been arrested after police say she fatally shot her 15-year-old brother inside their family home.
The Edmond Police Department announced Thursday, Sept. 10, that the girl had been taken into custody earlier that morning in connection with her brother’s death.
Her name has not been released because of her age.
Police said she was taken to a juvenile detention facility and booked on a charge of second-degree murder.
“We recognize this is a heartbreaking situation for the family involved,” the department said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with them as they grieve this tragedy.”
Officers were first called to a home in the 1100 block of Lapwing Road in Edmond on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 9.
When officers arrived, they found the 15-year-old boy dead inside the home, police spokesperson Emily Ward said.
Authorities believe the girl was the only other person inside the house at the time.
“We believe that she was the only other individual in the house at that time,” Ward said.
The children’s mother was not home when the shooting happened.
According to a Broadcastify recording cited by ABC7, the mother told police that her daughter contacted her and said someone had shot her son.
The teenage victim had reportedly been shot in the head.
Police have not publicly released a motive or explained what investigators believe led up to the shooting.
A neighbor said the family had not given any obvious signs that something like this could happen.
“It was shocking that it was them,” neighbor Richard New told KOCO. “The parents always seemed friendly, kids seemed friendly. Didn’t see the daughter much.”
The case remains under investigation.
