A 20-year-old Brazilian woman was arrested at a major airport in Spain after authorities allegedly discovered 69 packages of cocaine hidden inside different parts of her body.
The woman arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when police reportedly noticed her acting suspiciously.
According to Spanish outlet El Mundo, officers carrying out selective drug searches became concerned about the young traveler and pulled her aside for questioning.
Police said the woman appeared visibly nervous and allegedly told officers she was pregnant.
She then reportedly admitted that she had numerous packages of drugs concealed inside her body.
Investigators said 16 packages were removed from her genital area and later tested positive for cocaine. El Mundo reported that the woman voluntarily expelled those packages.
She was then taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Doctors and investigators allegedly discovered another 53 packages inside her body.
Authorities said the packages had been specially shaped to make them easier to insert and conceal.
All 53 additional packages also allegedly tested positive for cocaine.
In total, police said the woman had been carrying 69 packages of the drug.
After undergoing medical examinations to make sure she was physically stable, she was taken into custody.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was arrested on accusations related to crimes against public health under Spanish law.
