An Iowa man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting responsibility for the death of a 10-month-old boy who suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to the head while in his care.
Gunner Michael Jones, 28, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in Hamilton County court on Friday. He was sentenced to a combined 15 years behind bars and ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the child’s estate.
The case began more than three years earlier in Webster City, Iowa.
Shortly before 2 a.m. on April 16, 2023, police officers and paramedics were called to a home on 3rd Street after the infant’s mother reported that her son was unresponsive, turning blue and cold to the touch.
Emergency crews rushed the little boy to Van Diest Medical Center.
Doctors quickly noticed something disturbing.
In addition to the medical emergency, the baby had unusual bruising that authorities said appeared consistent with physical abuse.
The child was transferred to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, but he later died from his injuries.
An autopsy determined the baby had suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to his head. Authorities eventually classified his death as a homicide.
Investigators then focused on who had been with the child during the hours before he became unresponsive.
According to court documents, Jones and the baby’s mother were the only other people inside the home that night.
Both reportedly told investigators that the child did not appear to have any medical problems when his mother went to sleep.
Jones remained awake with the baby.
Investigators alleged that timeline left Jones as the only person alone with the child before the fatal injuries were inflicted.
The investigation continued for more than a year before prosecutors filed their most serious charge.
In November 2024, Jones was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety said evidence gathered by the Webster City Police Department and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation led authorities to believe Jones had access to the infant and caused the injuries that killed him.
Jones pleaded not guilty the following month.
His murder trial was initially scheduled for early 2026 but was postponed as the case continued moving through court.
Instead of taking the first-degree murder charge to trial, the case ultimately ended in a plea agreement.
Prosecutors added a child-endangerment charge, and Jones pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. The original murder allegation did not result in a murder conviction.
The guilty plea brought the years-long case to a close without a trial.
Neither the 10-month-old boy nor his mother has been publicly identified.
Jones will now spend up to 15 years in an Iowa state prison for a case that began with a desperate 911 call about an unresponsive baby and ultimately ended with investigators concluding that the child had suffered fatal head trauma while under his care.
