Ten men have now been sentenced to a combined total of more than 130 years for their roles in a revenge attack that ended with a mother being set on fire and her 13-year-old daughter suffering serious burns as they desperately escaped through an upstairs window.
The horrifying attack happened on Dec. 16, 2021, at a home on Beverley Drive in Bentilee, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
According to Staffordshire Police, the violence began hours earlier with a street fight in Longton involving Naveed Hussain, Bilal Ahmed, Kashif Ahmed and Ali Abbas.
During that confrontation, Kashif Ahmed was stabbed in the shoulder and later went to the hospital. Investigators said that injury became the spark for what prosecutors described as a deliberate revenge attack later that night.
At approximately 10:55 p.m., a group of men arrived at the Beverley Drive home demanding to speak with Hussain.
Police said the group smashed downstairs windows and poured gasoline into the hallway and outside a living-room window.
Inside the house was a 31-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter.
The woman was struck in the head and set on fire, according to police.
What followed was a desperate fight to survive.
With flames consuming the house, the mother and daughter smashed an upstairs bedroom window and jumped to escape.
The girl suffered burns to about 15% of her right arm.
Her mother’s injuries were catastrophic.
Police said she suffered burns over roughly 65% of her body and initially was not expected to live. She also suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a lacerated liver after escaping from the window.
She remained in a coma for two months.
After waking, she had to learn how to walk again.
Years later, police say she still requires lifelong medical treatment because of the injuries caused that night.
At sentencing, the court heard that the intended target of the revenge attack was believed to be Hussain, who had been involved in the earlier street fight.
Instead, the violence devastated the woman and her daughter.
Police said investigators spent years piecing together what happened using extensive surveillance footage, digital evidence and specialist forensic work.
That evidence ultimately helped prosecutors establish the different roles played by the men involved.
The case resulted in an 11-week trial that ended in February 2026, along with several guilty pleas entered before trial. Three defendants were sentenced earlier, while the remaining seven were sentenced Sept. 25 at Leicester Crown Court sitting at Loughborough. Staffordshire Police
The sentences were severe.
Shakil Uddin, 23, received the longest punishment — 34 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.
Ali Abbas, 23, was sentenced to 25 years after admitting two counts of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.
Haris Mahmood received 24 years and nine months after admitting the same offenses.
Riyadh Iqbal, 23, and Lukman Khan, 25, were each sentenced to 12 and a half years after being convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent to endanger life.
Muhammad Sufyaan-Shah, 25, received 11 and a half years for grievous bodily harm with intent.
Tayyeb Majeed, 24, received 10 and a half years for the same offense.
Kashif Ahmed, 26, was jailed for 48 weeks after pleading guilty to violent disorder.
Naveed Hussain, 32, received a six-month sentence suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty to violent disorder and possession of a knife or sharp object in public.
Bilal Ahmed, 27, was given a 15-month sentence suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty to violent disorder.
Detective Constable Howard Davies said the sentences brought an end to what police described as a lengthy and highly complex investigation.
He said the violence culminated in a deliberate act that placed lives at grave risk and praised the mother and daughter for the strength they have shown during years of recovery.
For the victims, however, the consequences will last far longer than the criminal case.
The mother survived injuries doctors initially feared would kill her, spent two months unconscious and had to rebuild her life from the ground up.
Her daughter, only 13 at the time, was forced to jump from a burning home to survive.
What began as a street fight hours earlier ultimately ended with two innocent people suffering devastating injuries and 10 men receiving sentences totaling more than 130 years.
