A 70-year-old Florida man was seriously injured while shopping at Publix after a stranger allegedly attacked him with a box cutter for a reason so bizarre it left investigators stunned.
The suspect, 47-year-old Ramsey Thomas Lyons, allegedly told police he wanted to kill someone because he disliked the 1960s and thought the elderly shopper looked like someone from that era.
The seemingly random attack occurred Saturday, October 10, inside the Publix supermarket at 2310 Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda, a Southwest Florida city about 100 miles south of Tampa.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim was walking through a grocery aisle shortly before 4 p.m. when he suddenly felt what seemed like a punch to the left side of his face.
When he turned around, he saw a man staring at him while holding a box cutter.
Moments later, the shopper noticed blood on his hands and realized he had been slashed.
The frightened victim rushed toward the store’s customer service area to get help as police were called to the scene.
Officers arrived to find Lyons standing near the supermarket entrance with his hands resting on his head. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators also recovered a box cutter from an aisle inside the store.
The victim was transported to Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte, where doctors treated a deep cut extending from his left cheek, along his jawline and down toward his neck.
He also suffered an additional wound to his upper chest and required numerous stitches.
But what Lyons allegedly told detectives afterward made the incident even more disturbing.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Lyons reportedly admitted that he had entered the grocery store intending to kill someone.
According to the arrest affidavit, he claimed he had been considering attacking a stranger for approximately two days.
He allegedly told investigators that he disliked the 1960s and selected the victim because the elderly man appeared to be from that period.
Police said the two men did not know each other and had no previous interaction.
“I just pulled it out of my pocket and stuck it in his neck,” Lyons allegedly told officers while describing the attack.
Investigators said Lyons also explained why he discarded the weapon after the assault.
He reportedly claimed he wanted police to see that he was no longer armed because he feared officers might shoot him or use a Taser.
Lyons allegedly mentioned having an undiagnosed mental illness during his interview with detectives. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed any psychiatric diagnosis or established whether a medical condition contributed to the incident.
Surveillance footage reviewed by police reportedly showed Lyons entering the store and walking through several aisles before the confrontation.
The recording also captured the victim fleeing toward customer service after the alleged attack.
Lyons was arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older, a serious felony under Florida law.
The enhanced charge reflects the victim’s age and the seriousness of the alleged assault.
Although investigators say Lyons admitted entering the store with the intention of killing someone, prosecutors have not announced an attempted murder charge.
He remains held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 16.
The incident has raised concerns about the unpredictable dangers of random violence in ordinary public places, especially when elderly victims are targeted.
