A Texas father is facing a felony charge after his 4-year-old son found an unsecured handgun inside the family car and accidentally shot himself while his parents were shopping, authorities said.

The tragedy unfolded October 1 in Cameron County, near the Texas-Mexico border, when the boy’s mother and father went inside a store, leaving their young son alone in their vehicle.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, the father had left a handgun unsecured inside the center console, within the child’s reach.

While alone, the boy discovered the weapon and accidentally discharged it, suffering a fatal gunshot wound to his face.

His parents rushed him to Harlingen Medical Center, where authorities were notified about the shooting. Despite efforts to save him, the child did not survive.

Investigators began working to establish exactly what happened during the time the boy was left unattended.

After interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage and examining additional evidence, detectives determined that the child had retrieved the handgun from the center console and accidentally fired it.

Nearly two weeks later, on October 14, sheriff’s investigators arrested the father on a warrant charging him with criminally negligent homicide.

The charge is classified as a state jail felony under Texas law. A conviction can carry a sentence of 180 days to two years in a state jail facility, along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.

Authorities have not released the father’s identity, explaining that they wanted to give the grieving family time to cope with the devastating loss.

The sheriff’s office has not announced additional charges against the child’s mother.

The incident occurred near San Benito, a community in South Texas. Local reporting placed the initial investigation near a grocery store outside the city limits.

The case highlights the potentially deadly consequences of leaving firearms unsecured around young children, even for a short period.

Gun safety experts recommend storing firearms unloaded in a locked safe or lockbox, with ammunition secured separately. A vehicle’s unlocked center console or glove compartment does not provide adequate protection against unauthorized access.

In announcing the arrest, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the family while urging gun owners to take precautions that could prevent similar tragedies.

The father’s case will now proceed through the criminal justice system. The charge remains an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
