A Tennessee family’s ordinary evening turned into an unimaginable nightmare when a young DoorDash driver was shot and killed while delivering food with his 14-year-old brother, who was also struck by gunfire and left fighting for his life.
John Diaz Santos, 22, had spent the evening of Thursday, October 15, with his family before deciding to head out for a few hours of work in Nashville. His younger brother, Alan, joined him for what should have been another routine night of food deliveries, something the siblings had done together before without any trouble.
Neither could have imagined that their trip would end in a parking lot shooting that would leave one brother dead and the other critically injured.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the violence erupted around 7:45 p.m. at the Birchstone Village Apartments on North Dupont Avenue in Madison, a neighborhood north of downtown Nashville.
The brothers were sitting inside a black Infiniti sedan when a man approached their vehicle and suddenly opened fire. Moments later, two additional men arrived, and one of them also began shooting toward the car.
As bullets struck the vehicle, John apparently attempted to escape by backing out of the parking space. Instead, the car crashed into a nearby fence as the three suspects fled the scene on foot.
Emergency responders rushed to the apartment complex, where they discovered both brothers had suffered serious gunshot wounds.
John was transported to Skyline Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him. His younger brother was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
For their parents, Juan and his wife, the devastating news arrived in a way they never could have anticipated.
Just hours earlier, the family had been sitting down for dinner when John mentioned that he planned to make some DoorDash deliveries and wanted Alan to accompany him.
Their father said the brothers had gone out together on previous evenings, usually spending two or three hours working before returning home safely. Nothing about that night’s plans seemed unusual, and there had been no indication that either young man was concerned about being in danger.
But later that evening, a police officer arrived at the family’s home with news that something had happened to their sons.
At first, Juan believed they had been involved in a traffic accident. He asked the officer where the crash had occurred and offered to follow him to the scene, still unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded.
The truth was far worse than anything he had imagined.
One of his sons was dead, while the other had been rushed to a hospital with a life-threatening injury.
Speaking with WSMV, Juan struggled to describe the overwhelming grief of learning that his oldest son would never come home.
“We don’t believe what is happening to us. One is not prepared for such a loss or news of this size,” he said.
The family’s heartbreak has been compounded by the uncertainty surrounding Alan’s recovery. While relatives mourn John, they are also holding on to hope that the teenager will survive his injuries.
In an online fundraiser, the family described the painful reality of grieving one child while desperately praying for another.
“We never imagined having to say goodbye to one of our sons while praying for the other to survive,” they wrote.
John was remembered as a kind, hardworking young man who had spent more than a year delivering food to help support himself and his loved ones. His family said he had big dreams for the future and was always willing to work toward building a better life.
Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, the family is now hoping to return John’s remains to their hometown so he can be laid to rest among loved ones.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover transportation, funeral expenses and the mounting financial burden of Alan’s medical care.
Meanwhile, Nashville homicide detectives are working to identify the three men involved in the shooting.
Police said investigators were pursuing promising leads, but no arrests had been announced as of October 21. Authorities have also not publicly identified a motive or explained why the brothers may have been targeted.
Although the circumstances have been described as an apparent ambush, investigators have not confirmed whether the attackers knew either victim or whether the shooting was connected to the food delivery.
The lack of answers has left a grieving family struggling to understand why an ordinary evening of work ended in such devastating violence.
The case also highlights the potential dangers faced by delivery drivers, who regularly travel to unfamiliar neighborhoods, apartment complexes and private residences while working alone or with others. However, police have not suggested that John and Alan were targeted specifically because of their DoorDash work.
As detectives continue gathering evidence, authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about the suspects to come forward.
Tips can be submitted anonymously to Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463, and information leading to an arrest may qualify for a cash reward.
For John’s family, however, the investigation is only one part of a heartbreaking ordeal that has changed their lives forever.
What began as a simple decision to make a few extra deliveries with his little brother ended with a young man’s life cut short and a 14-year-old boy fighting to survive.
Now, as they prepare to say goodbye to John, his parents are desperately hoping they will not have to endure the loss of another son.
