A Florida mother was arrested moments after stepping off a flight from Las Vegas after allegedly leaving her four children home alone for nearly a week, a shocking situation that came to light when her 9-year-old son suffered a head injury and his sister desperately called 911.

Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, is facing four counts of child neglect after investigators discovered that her children, ages 9, 11, 12 and 14, had allegedly been left without overnight adult supervision while she traveled across the country for work.

The disturbing situation unraveled around 8:30 p.m. on October 21, when one of the children called emergency services to report that a dumbbell had fallen onto her younger brother’s head.

Deputies rushed to the family home in Osceola County, where they found all four children without an adult present. The injured boy was transported to Celebration Hospital for treatment and was later released.

But when investigators contacted the children’s mother, they made a startling discovery: Miller was more than 2,000 miles away in Las Vegas.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Miller told deputies she had flown to Nevada on October 18 for a work-related trip and was not scheduled to return until October 23, leaving the children at home for five nights.

She insisted that she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to visit each morning, help the children prepare for school and check on them afterward. However, investigators said the babysitter was not required to remain at the house overnight.

Authorities contacted the children’s father, who agreed to take all four children into his care while deputies continued investigating the circumstances.

Rather than immediately confronting Miller, detectives arranged to meet her when she returned to Florida.

On the morning of October 23, investigators were waiting at Orlando International Airport as Miller’s flight arrived from Las Vegas.

Dramatic body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows deputies approaching the mother as she exits the aircraft, escorting her away from other passengers and placing her in handcuffs.

Miller was subsequently booked into the Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.

Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon condemned the alleged lack of supervision, emphasizing that parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are properly cared for.

“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect,” Blackmon said, warning that allegations involving inadequate supervision would be investigated and prosecuted when warranted.

Although the 9-year-old boy was discharged from the hospital, the incident has raised serious questions about the childcare arrangements Miller allegedly made before leaving Florida.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether she has entered a plea or retained an attorney. The charges remain allegations, and Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
