A Missouri mother is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly abandoning her 4-year-old daughter at a truck stop in the middle of the night, driving away with her two other children and later telling police she didn’t even have a daughter.

Kayla Marie Christensen, 34, was arrested following the October 23 incident at a Love’s Travel Stop in Neosho, Missouri, where employees discovered the little girl alone shortly before 3 a.m.

But investigators say the alleged abandonment was only the beginning of a disturbing series of events that also placed Christensen’s two young sons in danger.

According to court documents, witnesses saw the girl get out of a black Chevrolet Silverado before the vehicle left the property. Employees at the travel center realized the child was without an adult and immediately contacted authorities, keeping her safe until officers arrived.

Police launched an investigation to determine how the young girl had ended up alone at the busy roadside business in the early morning hours. What they reportedly discovered raised even more troubling questions about her mother’s actions.

Investigators allege Christensen deliberately left her daughter behind with no intention of returning for her. In a criminal affidavit, authorities accused the mother of abandoning the child under circumstances that could have resulted in serious injury or death.

The allegations took an especially shocking turn when officers eventually tracked Christensen down and questioned her about the missing girl.

Instead of acknowledging her daughter, Christensen allegedly insisted that her only children were the two boys traveling with her.

Police said she denied having a daughter altogether.

As investigators pieced together Christensen’s movements, they discovered that she had allegedly driven away from the truck stop with her sons and later traveled to a casino in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.

According to local reporting, Christensen entered the casino while leaving the two boys unattended inside her vehicle, prompting additional concerns about their safety.

Authorities also accused her of transporting the children without properly securing them in car seats or seat belts. Investigators reportedly discovered suspected drug paraphernalia, including syringes, inside the vehicle and within the children’s reach.

Prosecutors said those circumstances created a substantial risk of harm to the youngsters, adding to the seriousness of the allegations against their mother.

Following the investigation, Christensen was charged in Newton County with first-degree child abandonment and two counts of first-degree child endangerment. Local reporting has also described additional allegations involving drug paraphernalia and improper child restraints, although the police department’s October 28 announcement specifically confirmed the three felony charges.

The case has attracted attention not only because of the circumstances surrounding the little girl’s discovery, but also because of Christensen’s alleged response when confronted by investigators.

According to the criminal affidavit, authorities believe her decision to drive away, failure to return and subsequent denial that she had a daughter demonstrated an intention to abandon the child permanently.

Police have not publicly explained what may have motivated Christensen’s alleged actions.

Fortunately, the girl was found unharmed, and authorities credited attentive employees at Love’s Travel Stop and a nearby McDonald’s with helping ensure her safety.

The Neosho Police Department publicly thanked the workers for recognizing that something was wrong and taking immediate action to protect the child.

The investigation ultimately involved multiple agencies, including the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Wyandotte Nation Police Department, Missouri Children’s Division and Newton County Juvenile Office.

Local reports indicate all three children have since been placed in protective custody.

Authorities have released few additional details about their circumstances, citing the children’s privacy and the ongoing investigation.

Christensen’s next court date was not immediately clear, and publicly available reporting had not established whether she had entered a plea or retained an attorney.

  1. Make sure, those three kids know what their mother did. It will enhance their eventual future family “reunion” with their dear mother.
