A young father who stepped in front of a gunman to protect his 1-year-old son during a family vacation in Miami Beach was shot to death in a horrifying attack that has now ended with a 50-year prison sentence for his killer.

Tamarius Blair Davis, 27, learned his fate Thursday, October 29, more than five years after he fatally shot 21-year-old Dustin Wakefield outside a popular South Beach restaurant.

The Colorado father had been enjoying a meal with his wife, baby boy and other relatives when Davis approached the family with a gun, allegedly declaring, “It’s time to die.”

But rather than run, Wakefield made a split-second decision that his family believes saved his little boy’s life.

He stepped directly between the armed stranger and his son, pleading with the man not to hurt the child.

“He’s only a boy,” Wakefield reportedly told the gunman.

Moments later, Davis opened fire, killing the young father in front of his horrified family.

Now, after years of court proceedings and heartbreaking testimony, a Miami-Dade judge has sentenced Davis to five decades behind bars, rejecting his claims that psychedelic mushrooms caused him to lose touch with reality.

The senseless violence unfolded on August 24, 2021, along Miami Beach’s bustling Ocean Drive, an area famous for its restaurants, nightlife and tourists.

Wakefield, who lived in Castle Rock, Colorado, had traveled to South Florida with his wife, Karina Olguin, their infant son and other family members.

The group was dining outside La Cerveceria in the 1400 block of Ocean Drive when Davis, a visitor from Georgia, approached with a handgun.

According to prosecutors, Davis had consumed psychedelic mushrooms before the shooting and began behaving erratically while wandering through South Beach.

Investigators said he fired at strangers before confronting the Wakefield family, whom he later admitted he had chosen at random.

The gunman reportedly pointed his weapon toward the couple’s baby, prompting Wakefield to step forward and shield the child.

His desperate attempt to protect his son cost him his life.

Prosecutors said Davis shot Wakefield five times, continuing to fire after the young father collapsed.

Witnesses also reported seeing Davis laughing and dancing near the scene after the killing, behavior that became a disturbing part of the evidence presented during the criminal proceedings.

Police arrested Davis shortly afterward, and he was charged with murder and other offenses related to the shooting.

The case drew national attention, particularly because Wakefield had been killed while protecting his family from a stranger who appeared to have no connection to them.

In May 2026, Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and child abuse, eliminating the need for a criminal trial.

But the guilty plea did little to ease the suffering of Wakefield’s relatives, who returned to court this week to confront the man responsible for their loss.

During three days of emotional sentencing hearings, the young father’s family described the devastating consequences of the shooting and the future stolen from a little boy who would grow up without his dad.

Wakefield’s mother, Lora, called her son a hero, saying his final act reflected the compassion and courage he had shown throughout his short life.

“I know that he decidedly chose to lay his life down and protect people,” she previously told Denver television station KUSA.

She believed his actions may have saved not only his son’s life but also the lives of other people nearby.

Despite the unimaginable grief, Lora delivered a powerful message to Davis during the sentencing proceedings.

“I forgive you. Tamarius, I forgive you,” she told him.

But she also made clear that forgiveness did not mean he should escape the consequences of his actions.

She urged the judge to impose a life sentence, arguing that her son’s killer had shown no mercy to the family.

Wakefield’s widow also spoke about the enormous emotional toll of raising their son without his father.

The little boy, now 7, has spent most of his life without the man who gave everything to protect him.

His mother described the painful reality of watching their child grow older, knowing he will never experience the everyday moments he should have shared with his dad.

Birthdays, holidays, school milestones and countless ordinary family memories have all been overshadowed by the loss.

Wakefield’s father, Matt, also addressed Davis in court, delivering a pointed message about the difference between his son’s courage and the gunman’s actions.

The emotional testimony painted a picture of a hardworking young man whose greatest joy was his family and whose life ended during what should have been a happy vacation.

Davis, meanwhile, apologized and argued that his actions had been influenced by a drug-induced psychiatric episode.

His defense attorney, Juan Mourin, claimed Davis had experienced a severe break from reality after taking psychedelic mushrooms, allegedly believing he was inside a video game.

The defense urged the court to consider his mental state and impose a sentence closer to the mandatory minimum of 25 years.

Prosecutors strongly rejected that explanation, arguing that voluntarily consuming drugs did not excuse the decision to arm himself and shoot innocent people.

They sought a life sentence, describing the killing as a deliberate act that destroyed a family and traumatized everyone who witnessed it.

Ultimately, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Laura Stuzin imposed a sentence of 50 years in Florida state prison, including a 25-year mandatory minimum, followed by 20 years of probation.

The judge acknowledged the extraordinary suffering endured by the Wakefield family while explaining that she wanted to impose a punishment that recognized the gravity of the crime but still allowed the defendant a limited possibility of life outside prison.

She also recognized that no sentence could restore what the family had lost.
