A Texas woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting a mother outside a PetSmart after a seemingly minor disagreement over saying “thank you” spiraled into a deadly confrontation.
Keona Hampton, 23, pleaded guilty to murder in the October 7, 2025, killing of Cecilia Simpson, 41, at a Dallas shopping center. Her sentence was handed down September 23, but newly publicized court records have brought renewed attention to the disturbing circumstances surrounding the shooting.
What began as an argument over a simple act of courtesy ended with Simpson being shot three times in front of her daughter, who had accompanied her on what should have been an ordinary afternoon shopping trip.
According to investigators, the confrontation began at a Five Below store in the Wheatland Towne Crossing shopping center in southwest Dallas.
Simpson was leaving the store with her daughter when she held the door open for Hampton. When Hampton failed to thank her, Simpson became upset, sparking a verbal exchange between the two women.
But instead of ending there, the disagreement followed them to another business in the same shopping center.
Police said Simpson and her daughter drove to a nearby PetSmart, only for Hampton to follow them inside and continue the confrontation.
Witnesses described the situation becoming increasingly heated as Hampton allegedly challenged Simpson to take the argument outside.
One woman who witnessed the incident later told FOX 4 that Simpson and her daughter repeatedly tried to get Hampton to leave them alone.
“The shooter was saying, ‘Come outside. Let’s handle this outside. Let’s fight outside,'” the witness recalled.
PetSmart employees eventually intervened and asked those involved to leave the store, hoping to bring the disturbance to an end.
Unfortunately, the confrontation only escalated once they reached the parking lot.
According to an arrest affidavit, Hampton threw a bottle at Simpson’s vehicle as the mother and daughter attempted to leave. Simpson then approached Hampton, and the argument turned physical.
Investigators said the two women began fighting before Hampton pulled out a handgun and opened fire.
Simpson’s daughter told police she had started moving away from the confrontation when Hampton shot her mother three times.
The sudden violence left Simpson critically injured on the pavement while Hampton allegedly walked away, climbed into her black sedan and fled the shopping center.
Surveillance footage and cellphone videos recorded by witnesses helped investigators reconstruct the deadly encounter.
A 27-year-old emergency room nurse who witnessed the aftermath rushed to Simpson’s aid and began performing CPR while waiting for paramedics.
The nurse later described how the mother and daughter had tried to get into their vehicle and leave before the confrontation turned violent.
“The mother and daughter tried to get in the car to de-escalate the situation,” she told FOX 4, explaining that the argument escalated into a physical fight before the shooting.
Emergency responders transported Simpson to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save her, she died from her injuries.
The tragedy devastated her family, particularly her daughter, who witnessed the fatal confrontation unfold over an argument that began with an unacknowledged courtesy.
Dallas police launched a homicide investigation and quickly identified Hampton as the suspected shooter.
She was located and arrested later that day.
During questioning, Hampton reportedly admitted that the disagreement began after the encounter at Five Below. She also acknowledged following Simpson to PetSmart, arguing with her, throwing a bottle at her vehicle and ultimately firing the gun during the confrontation.
Hampton was charged with murder and remained in custody as the case moved through the Dallas County court system.
Rather than proceed to trial, she eventually accepted a plea agreement.
On September 23, 2026, state District Judge Tammy Kemp sentenced Hampton to 30 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to the killing.
Court records show she will receive credit for 303 days already spent behind bars.
The case has drawn renewed attention because of how an apparently ordinary disagreement between strangers escalated into deadly violence.
A simple exchange over manners turned into an argument that continued across multiple stores, spilled into a parking lot and ended with a mother losing her life in front of her daughter.
For Simpson’s family, the prison sentence brings a measure of accountability, but it cannot undo the devastating consequences of that afternoon.
And while Hampton now faces decades behind bars, the circumstances surrounding the killing serve as a tragic reminder of how quickly an everyday confrontation can spiral beyond control.
