A woman who once lived next door to a serial killer claims to know where his victims are, having recalled seeing him struggling with a wheelbarrow containing ‘waste’ covered in a tarpaulin.
Peter Tobin was serving a life sentence at HMP Edinburgh when he died of cancer at the age of 76 earlier this month, having been convicted in 2007 of murdering Angelika Kluk, 23, Vicky Hamilton, 15, and Dinah McNicol, 18.
Now, a woman who used to live next door to Tobin has recalled seeing him dispose of ‘waste’, claiming she knows where he buried other victims.
Speaking to the Daily Record, the unnamed female neighbor said: “I thought Peter Tobin was creepy, a weirdo.
“He was always out late, often at about 11:30 pm. We’d hear him before we’d see him – the haunting squeal of his wobbling wheelbarrow and shuffling steps along the alleyway.”
She explained how he used this wheelbarrow to transport waste to a nearby garage and a cabbage field, saying she suspects other human remains may be found at these sites – having alerted police about the suspicious activities near his then-home.
The neighbour continued: “There was an alley that led from his back garden, via a gate, to empty garages. It was just a few minutes’ walk but you could see Tobin struggled with the weight of the wheelbarrow at times.
“We sometimes saw him tipping the contents of his wheelbarrow into a cabbage field but one night when a friend and I were out walking the dogs, we saw him close to the derelict garages.
“He was hunched over his wheelbarrow, meticulously tucking the tarpaulin around his load.”
As she neared Tobin, the dogs started going ‘crazy’, barking and jumping towards the wheelbarrow in an attempt to ‘pounce on whatever was beneath the tarpaulin’.
Her friend asked Tobin what he was doing, and what was in his wheelbarrow – at which point he said he was ‘getting rid of some mud’ from his garden and ‘picking up some hardcore’ for the swimming pool he’d told neighbours he was building.
After murdering Hamilton and McNicol in 1991, Tobin had buried their bodies in the garden of his home on Margate’s Irvine Drive.
The neighbor continued: “When those two girls were found in his garden, I couldn’t believe it – I’d heard him digging that grave.
“I’d seen him digging elsewhere on the estate and thought, ‘Oh my God, I lived a stone’s throw away from a serial killer.’
“There was a lot of speculation about other young women missing. I was worried he had killed other girls and buried them in the area.”
The woman has directed police to the locations where she’d seen Tobin with his shovel and wheelbarrow, and while the garages were bulldozed in 2006, the cabbage fields still exist.
According to the Daily Record, both Essex and Kent Police confirmed they are aware of the former resident’s claims.
The neighbour added: “He told locals he was digging a pool in his garden, although he told others he was building a sandpit for his son.
“The running joke on the estate was that Peter Tobin was ‘digging for Australia’.”
