One 10-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed another with his father’s stolen gun in Sacramento, California, leaving a family in mourning and the surviving boy under arrest, according to authorities and a report.
Keith “KJ” Frierson had just gone outside to ride his bike around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he was gunned down, his grieving aunt told local outlet KCRA.
“He was smart, very intelligent, kind, loving, respectful,” his aunt, who was identified only as Erika, told the outlet. “He didn’t deserve this. He still had a whole life to live.”
Authorities did not identify Frierson’s alleged shooter by name, but said that he was a boy Frierson’s own age.
Just before the shooting, the boy went to his father’s vehicle to retrieve cigarettes for his father, 53-year-old Arkete Davis, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
The boy allegedly took a gun from inside the vehicle and bragged about his father having a firearm, authorities said.
He then allegedly shot Frierson and fled into a nearby apartment, according to the sheriff’s office.
First responders arrived to find Frierson unresponsive and bleeding from his head and neck.
They rushed Frierson to an area hospital, but he could not be saved.
Back at the scene, detectives found a gun in a nearby trash can, where it’s believed Davis tried to dispose of it, the sheriff’s office said.
The gun was previously reported stolen in 2017, and Davis was legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm, the sheriff’s office said.
Davis was arrested and charged with child endangerment and accessory after the fact, as well as a number of firearm-related felonies, while his son was charged with murder, officials said.
Davis is being held on $500,000 bail ahead of a Wednesday court appearance, and his son was taken to a county youth detention facility, authorities said.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper decried the slaying as “tragic and completely avoidable.”
“As more details of the incident come to light, there is definitely a concern about irresponsible parenting and that an ex-felon was illegally in possession of a firearm that led to this young boy’s murder,” he wrote.
Cooper added that the shooting was witnessed by a third child, who will now have to live with the memory.
“Not to be missed, all this happened in front of another 6-year-old child who saw the whole thing,” he wrote. “The trauma that child experienced always gets overlooked.”
“We cannot let this boy’s murder be a one-day news story and forgotten about by tomorrow morning,” he continued. “The issue of illegally possessing guns by those who should not have them and using them to commit violent crimes is a real one.”
