A California man has been arrested and charged with murder after the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend’s 3-year-old son, authorities say.

Sergio Colin-Gomez, 24, was arrested after he allegedly shot the child, named Ivan, in the head while trying to force his girlfriend to confess to infidelity, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office said in a statement on Thursday.

Officers in Santa Clara, Calif., responded to a 911 call on Feb. 20 from a woman claiming her boyfriend had shot her child, according to the statement.

Colin-Gomez, who is not the father of the victim, returned to their shared home late in the evening on Feb. 19 when the woman and her child were watching television, authorities said in the statement.

After the child fell asleep, Colin-Gomez asked her to speak with him in the kitchen and allegedly accused her of infidelity, according to a police report cited by KRON 4. Things briefly quieted down when the two decided to continue working on the relationship, per the report.

The couple decided to watch a movie, but one hour in, Colin-Gomez allegedly sprung up and began asking his girlfriend if she cheated on him, demanding she simply answer him with a “yes” or “no,” authorities said, according to the police report obtained by the outlet.

The woman escaped into her son’s room and locked herself inside, fearing her boyfriend, according to the district attorney’s statement.

He allegedly broke down the door, briefly left and then returned with a gun, per the statement.

As he continued to allegedly threaten the woman, accusing her of infidelity and trying to force a confession out of her, he said, “Don’t be stupid,” per the statement.

As the woman reached for the gun in his hand, Colin-Gomez allegedly shot the child in the head from about a foot away and fled the scene, authorities said.

“He was in the child’s life for about two years,” Barbara Cathcart, Santa Clara Deputy District Attorney, said, KTVU reported.

“We are sickened and heartbroken at the senseless murder of Ivan,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in the statement. “Nothing we achieve in court, no jury or judge, can make up for the lost life of this innocent child. We will sadly but steadfastly do our job to make sure this person will never harm another.”

Colin-Gomez was arraigned on Friday and is being held without bail, KTVU reported.
