A peaceful evening in Lakewood, Washington turned terrifying when gunfire broke out during a large park gathering Wednesday, leaving seven people shot and multiple others fleeing in panic.

The violence unfolded on May 28 as more than 100 people gathered near Tacoma to enjoy the warm weather. According to Lakewood police, a dispute between two groups spiraled into a mass shooting just after sundown.

“It was chaos,” said police sergeant Charles Porche. “People were running in all directions when officers arrived. The weather had brought everyone out, but the evening turned tragic in a matter of seconds.”

Five of the victims were treated at the scene by West Pierce Fire & Rescue and rushed to local hospitals. Three others arrived at medical facilities on their own. Authorities confirmed the victims include a 16-year-old girl in stable condition and a 38-year-old man now fighting for his life. Three others were listed in serious condition.

“Unfortunately, there were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire,” Porche said in a statement. “This was a careless, reckless act of violence, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”

At this point, investigators are still working to determine how many shooters were involved and whether the victims were targeted. No arrests have been made.

The shooting came just days after another violent outbreak on Memorial Day in Philadelphia, where two people were killed and nine injured in a separate mass shooting.

“This is the kind of heartbreak no community should endure,” Porche added. “People just wanted to enjoy the lake and sunshine. Instead, we’re dealing with seven gunshot victims.”
