A quiet Sunday evening turned into chaos in downtown Salem, Oregon, after a mass stabbing left eleven people hospitalized at a local homeless shelter.
The attack happened just after 7 p.m. at the Union Gospel Mission’s Men’s Mission, a large shelter that opened in 2021. According to Salem police, officers arrived swiftly at the scene and arrested a male suspect. His identity and motive have not yet been released.
Witnesses say the violence broke out during the shelter’s evening check-in. Craig Smith, the shelter’s executive director, told reporters that the suspect was new to the shelter and had stayed there the night before. He was reportedly about to check in again when something set him off.
“Something triggered him,” Smith explained in a phone interview. “He evidently had a knife in his bag and got into a fight right before handing over his belongings.”
At least one staff member working the front desk was injured in the melee. All victims were rushed to Salem Health Hospital with varying injuries. Their conditions have not been made public.
Police confirmed the incident is still under investigation. Detectives are reviewing security footage provided by the shelter, which reportedly captured the entire incident.
Authorities shut down Commercial Street near D Street during the response, diverting traffic as the area remained active with emergency crews.
The Union Gospel Mission is located just across from the Salem Police Department and has been serving the community since 1953. The nonprofit helps provide meals and shelter for up to 150 homeless men each night, and its mission focuses on restoring dignity and hope for those in crisis.
No updates have yet been provided by the shelter, hospital, or police, but the community is reeling from the unexpected attack.

The perpetrator should be immediately jailed with no bail, and he should be charged with multiple accounts of attempted murder. If convicted, he should never have a chance of parole. There are those in our society who need help and want it. This person needed help, but refused it. Society has no responsibility to help out such people, but should be required to protect others from them.
