A North Carolina neighborhood was rocked by violence after a convicted murderer allegedly gunned down a 63-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son—reportedly during an argument about trash.
Henderson police say they were called to the 600 block of Maple Street just before 7 p.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found Teresa Davis and her son, Joseph Jeffreys Jr., both shot. Despite emergency efforts, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspected killer? Their 41-year-old neighbor, Michael Sharron Wright, a convicted murderer who had been released from prison just months earlier.
According to friends and family, the confrontation started when Jeffreys went to Wright’s house to confront him for allegedly tossing garbage cans into Davis’ yard. That’s when Wright reportedly grabbed Jeffreys’ own gun and turned it on him and his mother. The shooting happened right in front of Jeffreys’ three young children.
“It was over trash—over some freakin’ trash,” said Tennisha Eaton, a friend of the victims, in an interview with local news. “This woman is gone. This boy is gone. That’s senseless.”
She added, “That’s so heartbreaking for the grandkids to be in the car, his kids to see their daddy and their grandmother get killed.”
Wright, who served 14 years for the 2010 murder of his uncle—whose body was found buried in a shallow grave—was considered armed and dangerous after the latest killings.
But in a surprising twist, Wright later contacted Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain personally and arranged his own surrender. Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, he called the sheriff and requested that only Fountain handle his arrest.
“He told me to head toward Louisburg and said he’d give me further instructions,” the sheriff recounted. Wright eventually met him in a restaurant parking lot, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Wright is currently being held without bond at the Granville County Detention Center. He is facing two murder charges as the investigation continues.
