Tragedy struck on Grapevine Lake in Texas when 18-year-old Ava Moore was killed after being hit by a jet ski—whose driver fled the scene.
According to Texas Game Wardens, Ava was kayaking on the lake Sunday evening, May 25, when a jet ski carrying two women slammed into her. One of the women stayed behind to speak with first responders. The other, who was reportedly driving the watercraft, took off in a car with an adult male, crashing into another vehicle on their way out. The pair then abandoned the car at a nearby apartment complex, police say.
Moore was pulled from the water by witnesses and rushed to the hospital, but sadly died from her injuries.
“She didn’t suffer in agony,” said witness Lisa Scrabeck, who helped try to save Ava’s life. “It’s very tragic, and I extend my deepest condolences to the family. I can’t imagine being the parents of this young girl.”
Authorities have released an image of the woman suspected of operating the jet ski and are urging anyone with information to contact them.
Ava had just completed her first year at the Air Force Preparatory School in Colorado Springs and was a standout student and athlete at Timber Creek High School. She played basketball for the Lady Falcons, helping lead the team to a strong record during her four years.
Her family is now raising funds for funeral expenses through a GoFundMe campaign, which has already brought in over $11,500 of its $20,000 goal.
“We are grieving the loss of our daughter at this time,” Ava’s family said in a statement. “Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved along with their families.”
Texas Game Wardens are handling the water fatality investigation, while the Grapevine Police Department is looking into the hit-and-run. Authorities say they are committed to finding those responsible and keeping Texas waters safe.
