A Pennsylvania man, still reeling from the devastating news of his wife’s death, was violently attacked in his own driveway—just one hour after learning she had passed away in hospice care.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded in the early morning hours of July 18 in Haverford Township. According to police, the 68-year-old man noticed someone trying to break into his son-in-law’s truck around 2:30 a.m. When he stepped outside to confront the would-be thief, the suspect turned violent.
Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola told local outlet WPVI that the suspect threw the man to the ground and punched him before fleeing. “He got cut, lacerations on his arm, he got banged up pretty good,” Viola told CBS affiliate KYW.
As if the attack weren’t horrific enough, it came at the worst possible moment.
“His wife had just passed away an hour earlier,” Viola said. “His whole family had come over to be with him, to grieve. Then this happened. It’s just very disturbing.”
The suspect was later spotted on a doorbell camera in another part of the neighborhood about 30 minutes after the attack. Police are asking for the public’s help identifying the man.
“This poor guy is going through the most traumatic time in his life, and now he’s got this on top of it,” Viola added.
