A New Jersey couple has been indicted on murder charges in connection with the death of their 3-month-old daughter.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ruben Santiago, 36, and Caitlin M. Gibson, 28, were arrested by Lakewood Township Police on May 7 after their infant daughter died in the hospital the day before.
The couple had called 911 on May 5, reporting that their baby was struggling to breathe. Emergency responders rushed to the home and began life-saving efforts, but the child died the following day.
An autopsy performed on May 7 revealed the baby had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, causing skull fractures and a subdural hematoma. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
Santiago and Gibson have been held without bond since their initial arrest. While records show murder charges were filed in May, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Sept. 10 that a grand jury has now formally indicted both parents, sending the case to trial.
At this time, it’s unclear whether the couple has legal representation. Court records show that hearing dates for Santiago and Gibson have not yet been scheduled.
