Two men are dead in what police believe was a murder-suicide sparked by a bitter fight over their family’s home in Queens, New York.

According to the NYPD, officers responded to a home in the Jamaica neighborhood around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, October 3, after reports of gunfire. Inside, police found two men — ages 37 and 41 — with gunshot wounds to the head. The younger man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the older man was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. A gun was recovered near his body.

Family members told the New York Daily News and New York Post the men were cousins who had been arguing for weeks over the sale of their family’s home — and how to split the money once it sold. The two-bedroom property had been listed for about a month with an asking price of $600,000.

“It was an issue with the sale of the house, some disagreement with how the money was going to be divided up,” the victims’ uncle told reporters.

According to the uncle, the 41-year-old had given his younger cousin power of attorney to handle the sale because of his real estate experience. But the arrangement quickly turned sour as tension over the deal escalated.

The uncle, who lives in the basement of the house, said he discovered his nephew’s body after the man’s longtime partner showed up, worried that she hadn’t heard from him all day.

“She said his truck was here, but she hadn’t heard from him since 11 a.m.,” a neighbor told the Daily News. “I said, ‘I don’t know, but the truck’s been there since noon.’”

When the uncle and the woman entered the dark house, they made a horrifying discovery.

“She turned on the light and saw him lying against the door,” the uncle recalled. “She screamed and started crying. He wasn’t moving. He must’ve been there a while.”

The pair fled the home, fearing the shooter was still inside — and moments later, they heard another gunshot.

Police believe the older cousin may have stayed in the house with his victim’s body for hours before turning the gun on himself.

The NYPD has not yet released the victims’ names, and the investigation remains ongoing.
