A Texas woman has been arrested after allegedly running over and killing her husband with an SUV during a heated argument, according to Pasadena police.
Authorities say 37-year-old Alina Gonzalez-Morelos is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, 42-year-old Leonardo Mendoza. The deadly incident unfolded early Sunday morning near a Pizza Hut at the intersection of Red Bluff Road and Deepwater Avenue in Pasadena, about 15 miles southeast of Houston.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a hit-and-run involving a black Chevrolet Tahoe that struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk before fleeing the scene. When police arrived, they found Mendoza critically injured. He was rushed to HCA Houston Healthcare Southeast, but he later died from his injuries.
Detectives say the couple had been arguing at their home shortly before the crash. Mendoza reportedly left the residence on foot. Moments later, Gonzalez-Morelos allegedly accelerated her SUV onto the sidewalk, plowed through two poles, and struck him.
Court documents indicate the argument that preceded the attack may have involved a text message, though details about that message have not been made public.
Police say Gonzalez-Morelos admitted to the crime during questioning. The case has been turned over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. She is currently being held at the Pasadena Police Department and is awaiting transfer to the Harris County Joint Processing Center.
