A 23-year-old Indiana woman has been charged with murder in the fatal road-rage shooting of a 21-year-old man who honked at her after her vehicle was stopped at an intersection, according to Indianapolis police.
Authorities say the incident happened on October 17 during what they described as a “short traffic delay.” The victim honked at Deborah Benefiel’s vehicle before driving around her. Police say Benefiel then followed the man’s car, enraged.
According to an affidavit obtained by WRTV, the victim’s girlfriend told investigators that Benefiel was “yelling, screaming and throwing her hands around” as she trailed them. Investigators say she then fired at least one shot from her car, hitting the 21-year-old man in the chest, and fled the scene.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. His name has not been publicly released.
Police quickly identified Benefiel as the suspected shooter using license plate reader technology. A witness also picked her out in a photo lineup, and she was arrested the same day.
“The senseless death of this victim is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of how quickly anger and violence can destroy lives and families,” Indianapolis Police Chief Chris Bailey said in a statement.
Benefiel has been charged with murder and criminal recklessness, according to court records.
