A former “Teacher of the Year” in Charleston, South Carolina, has been suspended after allegedly trying to run over her baby’s father in a Walmart parking lot.
Sade Delesia Nacheyle Nelson, 37, who was honored in 2025 at St. John’s High School, allegedly attacked the father of her child and his girlfriend during an October 18 custody exchange, according to Live5News.
Police say Nelson first punched the father repeatedly when he opened her car door to pick up their son, causing him to fall to the ground. Witnesses reported that she then tried to ram him with her car, with security footage reportedly showing her driving directly at him.
Nelson faces charges including third-degree assault and battery, domestic violence of a high aggravated nature, and unlawfully placing a child at risk.
In her defense, Nelson claimed that the child’s father had struck her and her son first. She said she walked over to his car to photograph the license plate when he allegedly knocked her to the ground. The footage appears to show the confrontation escalating before bystanders intervened.
After the incident, Nelson allegedly fled the scene with her son, telling police that a friend would speak to authorities on her behalf.
The Charleston County School District confirmed that Nelson has been placed on leave while the investigation continues.
“Because this is a personnel matter and an active investigation, the district cannot provide any additional details at this time,” spokesperson Andy Pruitt said.
