An Oklahoma mother has been charged with child neglect after authorities say she accidentally smothered her 5-month-old son while intoxicated. The tragic incident occurred on October 18, and Sarah Jamison, 31, is facing charges in connection with the death of her baby.
According to court records, Jamison was heavily intoxicated after drinking a six-pack of Voodoo Ranger’s Juice Force beer and a shot of rum on the night of the incident. The baby’s father, who had returned home from work at around 10 p.m., drank with her until she went to bed, bringing the child with her.
Jamison, who had been struggling with postpartum depression, later told investigators that her mental health struggles were worse this time around than with her previous children. While she claimed she had refrained from drinking during her pregnancy, she started drinking again about six weeks after giving birth.
The father reportedly went to bed and later noticed their son wasn’t breathing. In a panic, he attempted CPR and called 911. When officers arrived around 5:45 a.m., they found the baby unresponsive, gray, and not breathing. Jamison, still in bed, was reportedly unresponsive at first and had to be shaken awake. The smell of alcohol was reportedly present in the room.
When she woke up, Jamison allegedly slurred her words and said, “If my kid is dead, I might as well be too,” and, “I said I needed help, I tried to get help.”
Her blood alcohol level later measured at 0.309, more than three times the legal limit for driving.
Jamison is scheduled for an arraignment on Wednesday. The tragic incident has left the community heartbroken, with many asking questions about the devastating consequences of untreated mental health issues and addiction.
