An Indiana high school teacher is facing serious charges after two students accidentally ate THC gummies, thinking they were regular candy, authorities say.

The incident came to light at Angola High School on Thursday during the last class period, when a resource deputy learned the students had eaten the gummies. According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the candy was left out in the open, and the students were unaware it contained THC.

Further investigation revealed that 49-year-old Debra McGillem, a language arts teacher who lives in Reading, Michigan, had brought the gummies into the school. Deputies say they found additional suspected THC gummies on her person and determined she was allegedly under the influence while operating a vehicle.

McGillem now faces multiple charges, including neglect of a dependent and possession of a controlled substance on school property, both level 6 felonies, as well as operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Authorities also notified the Indiana Department of Child Services.

She was taken into custody and held at the Steuben County Jail on a $6,500 bond as of Saturday morning.

The superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County addressed parents on Facebook, saying, “The school district is aware that an MSDSC staff member has been booked into the Steuben County Jail. The district has initiated an internal investigation, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with district policy and applicable law.”
