A Staten Island ShopRite turned into a scene straight out of a movie the day before Thanksgiving when a 21-year-old employee allegedly started a massive fire that caused more than $100,000 in damage.
Dominick Sacchetti was arrested Wednesday for allegedly igniting the blaze on Nov. 26 inside the busy grocery store on Greaves Lane, just as shoppers were stocking up for their Thanksgiving feasts, according to the FDNY.
Authorities say surveillance footage captured Sacchetti setting the fire on a shelf stacked with paper goods. Flames quickly spread down the aisle, knocking over piles of paper towels and causing chaos in the store.
Luckily, a quick-thinking customer grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out most of the fire before it could cause even more damage. No injuries were reported, but the store still suffered more than $100,000 in losses.
“While residents of Staten Island were beginning to prepare for Thanksgiving with their families, this individual put the lives of shoppers and responding firefighters at risk,” FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. He added that thanks to the Fire Marshals, the person responsible was caught.
Sacchetti now faces multiple charges, including arson, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon called the act “needless” and emphasized that “acts of arson that endanger the lives of our fellow residents will not be tolerated here on Staten Island.”
Bail was set at $50,000 cash and $100,000 bond.
