A 69-year-old woman was tragically killed after being struck by a trash truck while crossing the street in Santa Ana, California.
The fatal accident happened on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at around 7:56 a.m. on the 600 block of S. Shelton Street. Authorities confirmed that the victim was Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga, a longtime local resident.
“The Santa Ana Police Department received multiple calls reporting a traffic collision in the residential area of Shelton and Bishop Streets,” the department said in a press release. “Officers, along with the Orange County Fire Authority, responded to the scene and discovered that a trash truck had collided with a pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
According to local reports, the woman suffered severe injuries in the collision. The trash truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police said the truck was traveling eastbound on Bishop Street when it made a right turn onto southbound Shelton Street at a roundabout, striking Rubalcava as she crossed the street. The garbage truck was later towed following the accident.
Neighbors told local news outlets that the intersection is dangerous and called on the city to add stop signs to prevent future accidents. Rubalcava was reportedly on her way to the grocery store at the time of the crash.
The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit is handling the investigation.

The driver probably don’t know the driving code .So much of this seems to be happening. The drivers cannot speak English and many do not seem to know the driving code.I wonder how many truck drivers have valid license
