A 23-year-old Minnesota woman is in custody after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death during what authorities are calling a “stupid argument.”
Katerina Ivanovna Markiv has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Quinton McKay Hughes at her St. Cloud apartment. According to police reports, Hughes called 911 around 4 a.m. Monday, claiming he had been stabbed by accident following a minor disagreement.
Dispatchers noted he was coughing and struggling to speak. Markiv then reportedly took over the call, telling the operator the stab wound was “at his left nipple” and even apologized to Hughes during the call.
Officers arriving at the 1200 block of Washington Memorial Drive found Hughes unresponsive on the floor with a severe stab wound and a significant amount of blood. First responders performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
After being read her rights, Markiv told detectives that she and Hughes had started dating in October and had spent the previous night at her apartment. She admitted to drinking throughout the evening and said a disagreement over intimacy escalated into a “stupid argument” that she “kinda made up in her head.”
According to the affidavit, Markiv said she swung a knife toward Hughes, thinking she would only “scratch” him. “Something in my head got triggered to where my hand just went forward and it f—ing shanked him,” she allegedly told police. “It just happened. It literally just a reflex of mine. I sometimes don’t even know my own strength either.”
Markiv reportedly tried to help Hughes by telling him to call 911 and applying pressure to the wound, saying she did not want him to die.
Investigators also spoke with coworkers who said Markiv had a history of intense anger, with one noting she had previously joked about getting “so crazy to the point she will kill somebody.”
Markiv remains in the Stearns County Jail, and her next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
