A 14-year-old middle school student has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Romeo English in Lavon, Texas. Lavon Police confirmed that the juvenile was taken into custody in Dallas on Monday, Dec. 15, without incident. The suspect’s name has not been released because they are a minor.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Dec. 13 during a small “pop-up” gathering at a residence on Wellington Drive in Lavon. Police say a verbal argument between the suspect and the victim escalated into a physical altercation, which was broken up by a resident of the home.
Shortly afterward, the suspect allegedly brandished a firearm and shot English multiple times at close range as he was preparing to leave the residence. English was transported to a hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Lavon Police described the shooting as an isolated and targeted incident and stated that they do not believe there is a continued threat to the public. The suspect is approximately 5’8” and weighs around 150 pounds.
Community Independent School District confirmed that the alleged shooter is a student at Community Trails Middle School and last attended school on Nov. 11. Officials emphasized that the act appears to have been targeted, and there is no ongoing threat to students in the district.
Following the arrest, the school district temporarily closed NeSmith Elementary, Dodson Elementary, and Community Trails Middle School to visitors on Tuesday, Dec. 16, and increased security presence on campus.
Lavon Police thanked numerous law enforcement agencies for assisting in the investigation and apprehension of the suspect, including the Collin County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Louisiana State Police, and multiple local police departments. They highlighted that the suspect was taken into custody without further violence in less than 48 hours.
