Matthew Traywick (victim)

A routine shopping trip turned deadly in Savannah, Georgia, leaving a family shattered after a father was shot and killed outside a Target store during a dispute over a parking space, according to authorities.

The Savannah Police Department announced Monday that 30-year-old Tyler Linn has been charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting.

The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Target store on Abercorn Street. Police say an argument broke out between two men over a parking spot. During the confrontation, Linn allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The victim was identified as Matthew Traywick, a father of three young children. Officers arrived to find Traywick suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

Authorities said Linn remained at the scene following the shooting and was taken into custody without further incident.

Savannah District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee confirmed that the violence stemmed from a parking dispute, calling the incident senseless and tragic.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson issued a statement expressing outrage and sympathy for the victim’s family.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim,” Johnson said. “No disagreement over a parking space — or anything else — should ever end in the loss of life. This tragic act of violence in a place where people should feel safe underscores the urgent need to reduce gun violence and strengthen community safety.”

While Traywick’s exact age has not been released, posts from his former employer and a GoFundMe campaign created to support his family describe him as the sole provider for his household and a devoted father to three young children.

According to local outlet WTOC, Linn previously served in the United States Army from 2015 to 2023.

As of Monday, police said the investigation into the deadly shooting remains ongoing.
