A tragic crash at a busy suburban intersection in Illinois claimed the life of a 95-year-old man and left three others injured, authorities said.

The fatal accident happened around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road in Deer Park, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were initially called to the intersection after reports of a disabled vehicle. A short time later, dispatchers received additional calls reporting a serious traffic crash at the same location.

Investigators say a 2006 Honda Accord had broken down and was disabled in the center westbound lane of Lake Cook Road. The driver, identified only as a 95-year-old man, exited the vehicle and was looking underneath the engine area, according to witness statements cited by authorities.

While the man was outside his car, a 2024 Honda HR-V driven by a 30-year-old man from Cary struck the disabled Accord from behind. The impact caused catastrophic injuries to the elderly man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other people were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Those injured include the driver of the Honda HR-V, a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights who was a passenger in the SUV, and a 77-year-old woman who was riding in the Honda Accord. None of the individuals have been publicly identified.

Officials also confirmed that a school bus was sideswiped during the crash. The bus driver was the only person onboard at the time and was not injured.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances that led to the deadly collision.
