A North Dakota man is facing serious felony charges after allegedly choking a woman for about a minute and then stabbing her with pliers — all because he believed she was talking too loudly.

Michael David Schaffer, 36, was arrested and booked into the Cass County Jail on Thursday, according to jail records. He is charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and domestic violence assault causing serious bodily injury.

The violent incident reportedly unfolded around 8:20 p.m. inside an apartment in Fargo. Police said Schaffer was inside the apartment with a woman and at least one other person when he became angry over the volume of their conversation.

According to court documents obtained by local NBC affiliate KVLY, Schaffer allegedly began smashing items inside the apartment before the situation escalated further. Authorities say he pushed the woman against a bathroom door and choked her with one hand for approximately 60 seconds.

When another person inside the apartment reportedly yelled at Schaffer to stop, police say he grabbed a pair of pliers, cursed, and stabbed the woman in the right elbow.

Officers with the Fargo Police Department were called to the scene and found the woman suffering from two cuts to her elbow, along with visible redness on her neck and chest consistent with choking.

Police said Schaffer left the apartment after the attack but later returned. He was found standing in the entryway of the apartment building and taken into custody. According to authorities, Schaffer denied choking or stabbing the woman and instead claimed she was the aggressor.

He was arrested and booked into the Cass County Jail and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, KVLY reported.

The case remains under investigation as prosecutors move forward with the charges tied to the disturbing allegations.
