A terrifying road rage incident on the outer loop of the Washington, D.C., Beltway turned deadly Sunday afternoon, leaving a 39-year-old woman and a dog dead, three others injured and the suspect fatally shot by police.
Virginia State Police said troopers were called to Interstate 495 southbound near Exit 52 in Annandale around 1:20 p.m. for reports of a violent altercation following a crash.
When a state trooper arrived at the scene, authorities say he was confronted by a man armed with a knife. The trooper fired his weapon in what police described as self-defense.
The suspect was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but later died. His identity has not yet been released.
Investigators said the stabbing began after a traffic crash, though details about what led up to the violence remain under investigation. A 39-year-old woman and a dog were killed during the chaos. Three additional victims were stabbed, but officials have not released updates on their conditions.
The violent scene shut down a major stretch of the Beltway for nearly six hours, creating massive traffic delays before lanes eventually reopened.
As speculation spread online about a possible terror connection amid heightened global tensions, state police emphasized that they do not believe the incident was terrorism-related.
