A quiet moment inside a parked car turned into a nightmare when a Missouri grandmother was shot and killed right in front of her grandson after a minor crash escalated into deadly violence.

Police say 55-year-old Shirley Johnson was sitting in a car with her grandson, Markel McCurry, outside her St. Louis home on March 31 when the incident unfolded.

According to investigators, McCurry had accidentally backed into a neighbor’s car moments earlier. What could have been a simple exchange over damage quickly spiraled out of control.

Authorities say 32-year-old Jamal Jones opened fire on the vehicle shortly after the minor collision.

In a chilling detail from the case, police say Jones later admitted he fired the shot to “intimidate” the grandson, claiming he didn’t want his car hit again. He allegedly told investigators he would have rather targeted the grandson than Johnson.

McCurry told police he had gotten out of the car to try to make things right and offer to pay for the damage when he suddenly heard a gunshot.

“We heard a shot, pow,” he recalled. “I’m trying to show him where I hit his car… then I look and see blood coming from her. I’m in shock.”

Johnson had been shot in the back and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The devastating moment has left McCurry reeling with grief and guilt.

“She meant everything to me,” he said, describing his grandmother as his best friend.

Now, he’s struggling to come to terms with what happened.

“I don’t feel like I saved the day,” he said. “Superheroes save the day… I wasn’t a big enough superhero for my grandmother.”

Loved ones say Johnson was a constant presence in his life, often texting him to come over for meals and making sure he was cared for.

Jamal Jones has since been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. Authorities say he has no prior criminal history, though his defense has raised concerns about possible memory issues.

A bond hearing is expected soon as the case moves forward.
