Richard Wills (victim)

A quiet farming town in Australia has been rocked by a chilling mystery after a 65-year-old man was found shot dead and buried in a shallow grave on his own property.

Richard Wills was last seen on the morning of April 5, leaving his home in Ouyen, Victoria, to begin what should have been a normal day working on his farm. But when he didn’t return for lunch, his family knew something was wrong.

His wife, Donna Wills, said it started like any other day.

“He just got up, had breakfast, and left,” she recalled. But as hours passed with no sign of him, concern quickly turned into panic.

By that afternoon, Donna began searching the property herself. When night fell without answers, she brought in a family friend to help. By the next morning, with Richard still missing, she contacted authorities.

Police and emergency crews launched a search across the massive 1,600-acre farm, which includes multiple access points and stretches along a highway. Friends, family, and community members joined in, hoping for any sign of him.

Then came the devastating discovery.

Two days after he vanished, Richard’s body was found buried in a shallow grave on the property. Authorities later confirmed he had been fatally shot.

Investigators now believe the killing was no random act.

“Sadly, Richard has clearly met with foul play,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Trewavas. “What remains unclear is who was involved, and why.”

The case has only grown more disturbing as new details emerge. Police say there is evidence suggesting Richard’s body may have been dragged behind a vehicle before being buried.

Despite the brutality of the crime, there are still no confirmed suspects, and no clear motive.

However, investigators are exploring several possibilities. One theory involves reports of stolen livestock in the area. According to local reports, Richard had recently complained about sheep being taken from his property.

Authorities also believe the killer may have known him.

While the farm is located in a remote area, it’s still accessible from a nearby highway—raising the possibility that someone familiar with the land, or with Richard himself, could be responsible.

A vehicle and phone belonging to Richard were recovered at the scene, adding even more questions to an already baffling case.

For Donna, the loss is almost impossible to process.

“Why would someone do this to him?” she asked, describing her husband as a kind-hearted man who would help anyone in need.

The couple shared five children and several grandchildren, all now left grieving a man they say was the heart of their family.

Police are continuing to canvas the area, review surveillance footage, and urge anyone with information to come forward—even anonymously.
