A brutal daytime attack on the Hollywood Walk of Fame left a 37-year-old man dead after he was allegedly beaten and stabbed by four men following a confrontation with a dog.
Berry Henderson was standing near a bus stop by Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, when the horrifying incident unfolded, according to KTLA.
Surveillance video reportedly showed a pit bull chasing Henderson into the street and biting at his legs.
Henderson then pulled out a knife and stabbed the dog while trying to defend himself, according to the outlet.
Moments later, four men allegedly attacked him. KTLA reported that one of the men was the dog’s owner.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE that three of the suspects physically assaulted Henderson using “bodily force and a small bat,” while a fourth suspect stabbed him multiple times with a knife.
KTLA also reported that one of the attackers was armed with a machete.
At one point, Henderson managed to break away from the group. Surveillance footage showed him bloodied and stumbling across Las Palmas Avenue.
“He was running away,” Henderson’s cousin, Demeya Brewer, told KTLA. “He was down on the ground, running away and they still continued to attack him.”
Henderson suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
In a GoFundMe created for his family, loved ones said Henderson was transported to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, about 20 minutes away, where he died later that evening.
The fundraiser said Henderson “passed away alone before our family could be notified,” calling his death an “unimaginable loss.”
“No family should ever have to learn of a loved one’s death in this way,” the page reads.
Police initially arrested three suspects, while a fourth man, identified by KTLA as the suspect accused of stabbing Henderson, fled the scene. An LAPD spokesperson later confirmed to PEOPLE on Saturday, May 30, that all suspects were in custody.
Authorities did not immediately provide information about the condition or status of the dog.
Henderson’s family says he was a peaceful man who did not deserve what happened to him.
“My cousin was not a threat to anyone,” Brewer told KTLA. “This was his area, his neighborhood and business owners knew him and we just don’t need that. We need more love and peace.”
Another cousin, Sharon Grimes, said she was disturbed that bystanders apparently did not step in or call for help as the attack unfolded.
“People around weren’t doing anything,” Grimes told KTLA. “I didn’t see nobody try to come to his rescue.”
The GoFundMe also described a chaotic and horrifying scene, saying witnesses watched in shock as blood was left across the sidewalk and nearby walls.
Loved ones remembered Henderson as a kind and authentic person who loved music and spending time in the city.
“Berry was like a gentle giant; cool, calm, authentic man who enjoyed music, spending time in the city he loved, and living life in his own peaceful way,” the fundraiser reads. “He was not homeless. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and his life mattered.”
Henderson was also a student at a local trade school, according to KTLA.
