One person was killed and another was injured after a shooting broke out at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department were called to ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital around 3:30 p.m. on June 16 after reports of gunfire inside the facility.

When officers arrived, they found two people who had been shot. One victim was pronounced dead, while officials have not released the condition of the second victim.

The names of both victims have not been made public.

According to ABC 7, the shooter was reportedly a hospital employee who opened fire on two other employees.

Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos declined to confirm whether the suspect was a current or former hospital employee, according to CBS Philadelphia.

As officers searched for the gunman, law enforcement cleared the entire hospital building.

The hospital was placed on lockdown for several hours while police searched the campus. The lockdown was later lifted, ChristianaCare said.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was later arrested, according to WDEL.

ChristianaCare president and CEO Jennifer Schwartz said the shooting was devastating for the hospital community.

“Our hearts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, and everyone affected by today’s violence,” Schwartz said. “This is a tragic and deeply painful moment for our community.”

Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer also addressed the shooting in a Facebook post Tuesday evening, offering condolences to the victims and thanking first responders.

“The ChristianaCare Wilmington Campus experienced an act of violence this afternoon that has tragically resulted in the loss of one life and injured another,” Meyer wrote. “We’re extremely grateful to the law enforcement officers, hospital security personnel, emergency responders, and medical professionals who helped protect others from harm.”

After the shooting, ChristianaCare said it had activated wellbeing and behavioral health resources to support caregivers affected by the violence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
