A Tennessee woman is accused of shooting a tow truck worker after she realized her vehicle was about to be repossessed and allegedly tried to drive away before the tow could happen.
Iysha Chapman, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault, according to Shelby County court records. She is being held in jail on a $150,000 bond.
The incident unfolded around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday on Treadwell Street in Memphis, where Chapman was staying, according to an affidavit of complaint.
A tow truck worker told investigators that he and a co-worker had received a repossession order for a 2015 Lincoln MKC and went to the address listed on the order.
When they arrived, a woman later identified as Chapman came outside and asked if she could get some personal items out of the vehicle. The workers allowed her to collect her belongings and told her she would need to contact the lien holder about the repossession, according to the affidavit.
But things allegedly escalated when one of the workers asked for the keys back.
Chapman allegedly refused and told them, “You all will have to drag it.”
One of the tow truck workers said he got into the truck and prepared to do exactly that. Moments later, he allegedly heard Chapman say, “I will kill you.”
Authorities say Chapman then fired a gun, striking the other tow truck worker in the shoulder.
The wounded worker got into the truck, and the two men drove away before calling 911.
When Memphis police arrived at the Treadwell Street home, they spoke with Chapman. According to the affidavit, she told officers she came outside and saw her vehicle being towed.
Chapman allegedly said she had missed a payment on Monday but believed she had a five-day grace period.
She told police she tried to jump into the vehicle and drive away, but claimed one of the tow truck drivers stopped her from getting inside by pushing her back, according to the affidavit.
Chapman said she “felt helpless,” then went into her purse, pulled out a firearm and fired a shot, striking the man in the shoulder, authorities allege.
Investigators later obtained a search warrant and seized a teal .380 Glock that had five live rounds in it.
The injured tow truck worker was shown a six-person photo lineup and positively identified Chapman, according to the affidavit.
Chapman was arrested and booked into jail. She is expected to appear in court Monday.
