A California mother who was five months pregnant with twins was killed along with her unborn babies after another driver allegedly ran a stop sign and slammed into her car.
Lorena Lopez was driving through Apple Valley in San Bernardino County on Saturday with her two young children in the car when the deadly crash happened.
Authorities said a 25-year-old driver went through a stop sign and crashed into Lopez’s 2021 Nissan Altima.
Lopez died from her injuries. Her unborn twins, a boy and a girl, also did not survive.
Her two other children suffered severe injuries in the wreck but miraculously survived.
Lopez’s family said she was a devoted mother whose life was taken far too soon.
“Lorena was a loving mother whose life was cut short far too soon,” her sister-in-law, Kiara Mendez, wrote on a GoFundMe page created for the family.
“Her two children were also hospitalized as a result of the accident, and the family is now facing unimaginable grief and hardship.”
Photos from the crash scene showed Lopez’s badly damaged car with its airbags deployed as emergency crews responded.
The tragedy has left her loved ones devastated and demanding justice.
At an emotional vigil held Wednesday, Lopez’s brother Jose said no punishment could ever make up for what the family has lost.
“I hope he pays,” he told ABC. “Even if he does 100 years, there is not enough time that will bring her back.”
The crash remains under investigation.
