A retired Army veteran was shot and killed outside a Florida Walmart after a heated argument over a parking space spiraled into deadly violence, authorities said.
Bart Diguglielmo, 62, was shot just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday outside the Walmart Supercenter in North Lauderdale, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Diguglielmo and an unidentified woman became involved in a verbal dispute over a parking spot before the confrontation turned violent.
The woman told police she fired in self-defense.
Disturbing video shared on social media captured part of the confrontation.
The footage shows a woman wearing a white shirt stepping out of her vehicle while holding a gun. She can be seen arguing with a man believed to be Diguglielmo, who was wearing a gray shirt.
The pair repeatedly pointed at each other as the argument unfolded in the parking lot.
At one point, Diguglielmo raised both arms in the air while standing in an empty parking space.
The video then appears to show him following the woman around another vehicle as she points the gun in his direction.
Moments later, a single gunshot rings out and Diguglielmo collapses to the ground.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
Witness David Anderson said he heard a woman screaming after the shooting.
“I was walking up and heard a lady screaming,” Anderson told CBS News Miami. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things.”
Diguglielmo was a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant and a decorated veteran of Operation Desert Storm, according to his family.
His sister described him as a devoted Christian and a caring person who would never intentionally hurt anyone.
“He was a Christian man and a very good person and would not hurt anyone,” she said.
Originally from Hammonton, New Jersey, Diguglielmo reportedly served as a combat nurse, combat medic and tactical communications specialist.
He later worked as a nurse before retiring and was living in Lauderhill, Florida, at the time of his death.
Authorities have not publicly released the name of the woman who fired the shot.
The Broward County State Attorney’s Office will review the case and decide whether criminal charges should be filed once the investigation is complete.
