What began as joking between two Taco Bell employees allegedly spiraled into a violent confrontation when one worker threw boiling water on the other inside a Memphis restaurant, police said.
Authorities said the incident unfolded after Angela Henderson and an unidentified male coworker exchanged what was initially described as “playful banter.”
According to the Memphis Police Department, the male employee told investigators that Henderson jokingly snatched a second T-shirt he had been carrying.
He responded by grabbing Henderson’s iPad from an area near the cash register and placing it beside a trash can inside the restaurant.
Police said Henderson became angry and warned the coworker that she was going to burn him with hot water.
She then allegedly went into the kitchen, retrieved a pot filled with boiling water and threw it on the man as he sat in the restaurant lobby.
Henderson later acknowledged that she lost control after repeatedly demanding that her coworker return the iPad.
“Before you know it, I had blanked out after asking him many times to give me my iPad, right?” Henderson told WMC.
“Before you know it, once I blanked out, I was just pouring water on him.”
Authorities did not immediately release additional information about the employee’s injuries or identify him publicly.
Henderson was released from jail on Wednesday, July 22, after posting a $5,000 bond, according to court records.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 27.
The Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk’s Office and Taco Bell were contacted for additional comment.
