A Massachusetts middle school teacher and summer camp counselor has been arrested after investigators accused him of possessing child sexual abuse material.
Leon Dyer, 45, of Belmont, was arrested Saturday, July 25, on two counts of possession of child pornography, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The arrest was carried out by the state police Cyber Crime Unit’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Crime Scene Services and the Belmont Police Department.
Authorities have not disclosed what triggered the investigation or provided details about the material Dyer is accused of possessing.
Dyer was expected to appear in Cambridge District Court on Monday, July 27, as the investigation continued.
Dyer worked as a technology education teacher at Belmont Middle School, according to the school’s website.
Belmont Public Schools Superintendent Jill Geiser said Dyer has been banned from all school property and had his access to school-issued technology accounts suspended following his arrest.
The district is also cooperating with law enforcement.
“We have no information at this time to suggest that this individual engaged in any inappropriate conduct with BPS students, on BPS property, or otherwise in connection with his employment with BPS,” Geiser said.
She added that the district would provide additional information to families and the school community when possible.
Geiser also said Dyer had undergone required employee screenings and regular reviews, including criminal background checks.
The arrest has alarmed some parents, including Mark Strong, whose daughter was taught by Dyer.
Strong told Boston 25 News he was “shocked” by the allegations and concerned about Dyer’s access to student photographs and school activities.
“It made me a little worried,” Strong said. “He also conducted the trips to Washington, D.C., with the kids. He had a huge hand in the yearbook. So, pictures coming to him of all of the kids, all of the students.”
State police also said Dyer worked at a summer camp in Middleboro, approximately 50 miles south of Belmont.
Authorities did not publicly identify the camp.
However, Dyer’s LinkedIn profile lists him as a head counselor and camp administrator at Camp Avoda, a Jewish overnight camp for boys. He is also listed in the camp’s 2026 family handbook.
An employee at the camp told Boston 25 News that staff members were aware of the arrest and were cooperating with investigators.
“We’re aware of the situation,” the employee said. “We’re cooperating with the authorities, and they’ve told us there’s no evidence of any campers being involved with the case.”
There was no immediate indication that any Belmont Public Schools students or summer campers were connected to the alleged material.
Massachusetts State Police, Belmont Police, Cambridge District Court and Camp Avoda did not immediately provide additional comment.
The investigation remains ongoing.
