A woman who filmed herself speeding on Snapchat before causing a horrific crash that killed two people has had her prison sentence increased by more than two years.
Liberty Mitchell, now 21, was driving toward the English village of Aldsworth on Dec. 2, 2022, when she attempted to pass three vehicles at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone.
Mitchell, who was 18 at the time, crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a taxi, triggering a devastating multi-vehicle pileup.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, 35-year-old history teacher Moyra Whelan, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital.
Six other people were injured in the crash, including three who suffered serious injuries.
Investigators later discovered videos on Mitchell’s phone showing her filming herself while speeding and driving dangerously.
Mitchell, a self-employed house cleaner from Chipping Norton, was traveling between jobs when the crash happened. Authorities said her insurance policy did not cover business-related driving.
She pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing death while uninsured and three counts of dangerous driving.
On Feb. 13, 2026, Mitchell was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison.
She was also banned from driving for eight years and four months and will be required to pass an extended driving test before she can regain her license.
However, U.K. Attorney General Ellie Reeves later referred the case to the Court of Appeal under the country’s Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.
The program allows victims, police officers and members of the public to request a review when they believe a sentence is too light.
Following a judicial review, Mitchell’s sentence was increased by two years and seven months on Tuesday, July 28.
She will now serve a total of nine years and three months behind bars.
Reeves described Mitchell’s actions as reckless and offered her condolences to the families of Codreanu and Whelan, as well as everyone else affected by the crash.
“I welcome the Court of Appeal’s decision to increase her sentence, and I pay tribute to the emergency services who treated the injured at the scene,” Reeves said.
